AFS-USA, a global nonprofit organization, is a leading international education advocate and thought leader. For over 65 years, it has worked to enhance the global competency of US citizens. It currently sends approximately 1,000 US students abroad each year, partners with over 1,400 US high schools to advance global learning, and hosts nearly 2,300 international high school students, who spend a year studying in US high schools and living with US host families. AFS-USA provides more than $3 million in scholarships and financial aid to US students each year, and maintains a network of close to 5,000 US volunteers, who are instrumental in carrying out this work.

  • AFS-USA works toward a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership.

  • Sending Programs: Each year, AFS-USA sends approximately 1,000 students abroad to more than 40 countries. These programs range in duration from two weeks to a full academic year, and students can choose programs that have a particular emphasis on language learning, community service or other special interests and activities. During most programs, students live with local host families, allowing for maximum cultural immersion and relationships that last a lifetime.

Hosting Programs:  In addition to sending US students abroad, AFS-USA hosts around 2,300 international students each year from 90 countries. These students come to the US to participate in AFS-USA’s core high school programs, as well as US Government Sponsored Programs, including: the Kennedy-Luger Youth Exchange & Study (YES) Program; the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) Program; and the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) Program.  The American families who host these students have the opportunity to learn about another culture, while also broadening the perspective of an international young person. The experience is truly life-changing for both parties.

Worldwide Volunteer Network:  AFS-USA relies on the hard work of 5,000 volunteers across the US, who provide localized support to hosted students, host families, local schools, participants preparing to study abroad and their parents. A worldwide network of 44,000 AFS volunteers provides support to participants while abroad.

Active Alumni Network: AFS Exchange Students become AFSers for life. While abroad, they form strong bonds with fellow AFS participants from around the world. This significantly broadens their social network, giving it global reach. Once back in the US, AFS participants benefit from numerous alumni resources that help them stay connected and to leverage their study abroad experience for college and career success.

Partners: AFS-USA works with numerous community partners in the US to promote global education, including Global Nomads Group, Ashoka’s Youth Venture, the Asia Society, the National Society for High School Scholars (NSHSS) and more.

  • AFS-USA is an international exchange organization operating in more than 50 countries to provide intercultural learning opportunities for students and adults.
